Before they were married, Raymond lived in Nellie, Ohio and Bertha lived in Gambier, Ohio. The story of how Raymond and Bertha were married: It was almost too late too get their marriage license. The janitor was mopping the floor when he saw them outside. Opening the door for them he told them that they needed to see Judge Purdy who was still in his office. After they got Their license they went to the Preacher home, but he was out on a call. While they were waiting, the cat knocked over the bird cage and quickly ate the canary. As the cat ate the bird the preacher's daughter was in tears. Bertha said that "We has plenty of time to calm our nerves."
